Mr Simon Wong Wie Kuen is the Trade Representative of the Singapore Trade Office in Taipei.
Mr Wong graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Social Science in Sociology (Honours) in 1990. He obtained his Master of Arts in East Asian studies from Cornell University, USA in 1998.
Mr Wong joined the Singapore Foreign Service in 1990. In the Ministry’s Headquarters, Mr Wong covered several portfolios including Western Europe and China. He was appointed Director/Americas from April 2005 to July 2007. He was also concurrently appointed Director/Europe (May 2005 to February 2006) and subsequently Director/Northeast Asia from April 2006 to January 2009. Prior to his appointment as Trade Representative, he held the position of Deputy Secretary (International) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (August 2012 to June 2015). As Deputy Secretary (International), Mr Wong also concurrently served as Singapore’s Head of Delegation to the Arctic Council. Mr Wong was a Member of the Board and Academic Panel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Diplomatic Academy (2012 to 2015) and Board of Member of the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (2012 – 2015).
His overseas assignments included postings in Seoul (December 1992 to December 1995), Beijing (January 2000 to March 2005), as well as Hanoi, where he was Ambassador from February 2009 to August 2012.
Mr Wong was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in 2002, and the Long Service Award (25 years) in 2014 by the Singapore Government. He was also awarded the Vietnam Order of Friendship in 2012 by His Excellency President Truong Tan Sang, and the Order of St Michael and St George in 2014 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
