Visit by Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Finance Heng Swee Keat to India, 1 to 4 October 2019

Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Minister for Finance Heng Swee Keat is currently in New Delhi, India, for a bilateral visit.
 
DPM Heng had meetings with Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Minister of Railways and Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal. DPM Heng and Minister Sitharaman discussed regional and global economic developments, and agreed on the importance of countries working together to address common challenges. With Minister Goyal, DPM Heng highlighted the opportunities between ASEAN and South Asia. DPM Heng also discussed potential areas of collaboration with the two Ministers, including infrastructure, digitalisation, logistics, air services, trade facilitation, and tourism. They also noted the good progress of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations.
 
DPM Heng also co-chaired the World Economic Forum (WEF) Indian Economic Summit (IES). At the Opening Plenary, DPM Heng spoke on the need for governments, businesses and communities to come together to create solutions for the global commons. During DPM Heng’s session on “From Digital Divide to Digital Dividends”, he stressed the importance of citizen-centricity and digital literacy to enable citizens and businesses to succeed in the digital age. 
  
DPM Heng will call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi tomorrow. He will also call on the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, who is a fellow IES co-chair.
