Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam visited Rome and the Vatican City from 11 to 13 May 2015.
In Rome, Minister Shanmugam met his Italian counterpart, Mr Paolo Gentiloni. The two foreign ministers agreed to deepen cooperation between Singapore and Italy in areas such as trade and investment and counter-terrorism. They also had a good exchange on the recent developments in Asia and Europe.
In the Vatican City, Minister Shanmugam held separate meetings with the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher and Prefect of the Secretariat of the Economy Cardinal George Pell. The leaders reaffirmed the friendly relations between Singapore and the Holy See and agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Minister Shanmugam also attended the weekly General Papal Audience at the St Peter’s Square, and was granted a baciamano (brief audience) with Pope Francis.
Minister Shanmugam returned to Singapore on 14 May 2015.
