MFA PRESS STATEMENT: ASEAN FOREIGN MINISTERS' RETREAT, 10 TO 11 JANUARY 2012
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam attended the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Siem Reap, Cambodia from 10 to 11 January 2012, which is the first ASEAN Ministerial Meeting under Cambodia's ASEAN Chairmanship.
The Ministers reaffirmed their commitment towards ASEAN integration and achieving the ASEAN Community by 2015, including the implementation of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity and the Initiative for ASEAN Integration. They underlined the need to strengthen efforts to reduce the development gap within ASEAN, in line with Cambodia's theme for its Chairmanship, "ASEAN: One Community, One Destiny".
During their exchange of views on regional and international issues, the Ministers discussed the recent developments in the South China Sea and the Korean Peninsula. In addition, they stressed the need to maintain ASEAN's centrality in the regional architecture within the region. The Ministers noted the positive developments in Myanmar and expressed their support for the lifting of sanctions.
