03 November 2019

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan attended the 10th ASEAN-United Nations (UN) Summit on 3 November 2019 in Bangkok. He underscored the importance of collective action on environment-related challenges, including climate change, haze pollution, and marine debris. He reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to national, regional, and international efforts to tackle climate change.

Minister Balakrishnan called for closer cooperation in combating terrorism and violent extremism at the domestic and regional levels. He highlighted the need for ASEAN and the UN to work together to strengthen multilateralism and uphold an open, inclusive, and rules-based global order, at a time when commitment to multilateralism and international institutions is weakening.

Minister Balakrishnan also met Bahrain Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa on the sidelines of the Summits in Bangkok. Minister Balakrishnan congratulated him on Bahrain’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. They discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and step up engagement between ASEAN and the Gulf Cooperation Council. They also exchanged views on developments in both regions.
