MFA Press Statement: Singapore’s Humanitarian Assistance to Sri Lanka

Singapore is deeply concerned over the serious humanitarian situation in northern Sri Lanka.

The United Nations (UN), its related agencies and the international media have reported on mounting civilian casualties and the humanitarian emergency conditions in the conflict zone as well as in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps.

In view of the urgent humanitarian situation and in response to the humanitarian action plan mounted by the UN, the Singapore Government will contribute US$30,000 to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which is one of the aid agencies involved in the humanitarian relief efforts in Sri Lanka. This contribution will go towards meeting critical needs such as the provision of safe water, sanitation facilities and basic hygiene items to thousands of civilians displaced by the conflict.

Singapore hopes that a durable peace will be achieved in Sri Lanka as soon as possible, and that all parties in the conflict will take steps to prevent further civilian casualties.

Singapore also urges all parties to spare no effort in tackling the dire humanitarian situation in northern Sri Lanka.
