MFA Press Statement: Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo at the 63rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, New York, 29 September 2008

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo, who is in New York from 21 September to 1 October 2008 to attend the 63rd session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, addressed the General Assembly on 29 September 2008. In addition, he attended the Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting and the ASEAN Ministers' meeting with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and President of the General Assembly Miguel D'Escoto Brockmann. He also had meetings with his counterparts from Jordan and Morocco.

During the ASEAN Ministers' meeting with Secretary General Ban and President Brockmann, they discussed cooperation between ASEAN and the UN, such as in the areas of disaster relief and recovery. They also had a general exchange of views on recent developments in the world.

Minister Yeo and Foreign Minister of Jordan Dr Salaheddin Al-Bashir discussed the situation in the Middle East. They also exchanged views on the Jordan-Singapore Free Trade Agreement.

Foreign Minister of Morocco Taieb Fassi Fihri briefed Minister Yeo on the economic situation in Morocco. They agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in a number of areas, including trade, investment, tourism, education and public administration.
