MFA Press Statement: Official Visit by Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo to Libya and Yemen, 19 to 27 May 2007

Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo will be making an official visit to the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahirya from 19 to 22 May 2007 at the invitation of the Secretary of the General People's Committee for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation Abdelrahman M. Shalgham. This will be the first ministerial visit to Libya since diplomatic relations were established on 3 March 2006. In Libya, Minister Yeo will be meeting members of the Libyan cabinet, government officials and business leaders. A business delegation will accompany Minister Yeo to Libya.

After Libya, Minister Yeo will make an official visit to the Republic of Yemen from 23 to 27 May 2007 at the invitation of Yemen's Minister of Foreign Affairs Abu Bakr Al-Qirbi. The visit will also mark the first ministerial-level visit to the Republic of Yemen. While in Sana'a, Minister Yeo will meet President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Mujawwar, Minister Al-Qirbi as well as other senior Yemeni leaders. Minister Yeo will visit Hadhramaut Governorate, where he is scheduled to meet senior government officials as well as Singaporean students studying in Tarim.

Minister Yeo will be accompanied by Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Parliament's Friendship Group on the Middle East, Dr Ahmad Mohd Magad. For Yemen, Minister Yeo will be accompanied by members from the Arab Association Singapore and grassroots leaders from the Aljunied Group Representational Constituency.
