COMMENTS BY MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS SPOKESMAN

In response to press queries on the Taiwan Presidential election, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman replied as follows:

On the outcome of the election:

"The election reflects the choice of the Taiwanese people. We congratulate Mr Chen Shui-bian. We hope that he will usher in an era of serious dialogue and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait and contribute towards the stability of the Asia Pacific region."

On its impact on Singapore's relations with Taiwan:

"Singapore and Taiwan have enjoyed friendly relations for many years. We are confident that this will continue regardless of changes in the leadership in Taiwan."

On its impact on Singapore's One China policy:

"Our One China policy has been consistent and it remains unchanged. Singapore recognises that there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of China. The Government of the Republic of Singapore recognises the Government of the People's Republic of China."
