San Marino
Use our advice together with your own research from reputable sources to plan your trip.
Entry and Exit
San Marino is accessible via Italy, and there are no border controls when entering San Marino from Italy. Travellers should therefore ensure that they meet Italy / Schengen entry requirements, including having a passport containing a valid entry stamp from a Schengen Area country.
Travellers entering the Schengen Area should note that their passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the intended date of departure from the Schengen Area and have been issued within the last 10 years.
EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
From 12 October 2025, Schengen countries are gradually introducing the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). Travellers may be required to provide biometric data (fingerprints/photo) at external border checks.
Safety and Security
Street crime in San Marino is very rare, but travellers should still take precautions to safeguard passports and valuables.
Terrorist attacks in San Marino cannot be ruled out. Travellers are advised to remain vigilant, especially in crowded places and areas frequented by tourists.
Local Laws
All visitors and residents are subject to San Marino’s laws and penalties.
Penalties for the possession, use, or trafficking of illegal drugs can be severe. Travellers should not carry or consume illegal substances.
As there are no border controls when entering San Marino from Italy, travellers should carry identification and ensure that they can demonstrate lawful entry into the Schengen Area (e.g. passport with a valid Schengen entry stamp).
