Austria
Use our advice together with your own research from reputable sources to plan your trip.
Entry and Exit
Austria is part of the Schengen Area. Singaporeans can visit Austria for up to 90 days – within 180 days from the date of initial entry into the Schengen Area – without a visa, provided no employment is pursued.
Entry into any of the European countries in the Schengen Area for short-term tourism, business, or transit to a non-Schengen destination, requires a minimum three months’ passport validity beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen Area. We recommend that travellers should have at least six months’ passport validity. Singaporeans should have their passports with them when crossing borders, even within the Schengen Area.
As immigration requirements can change at short notice, travellers are advised to refer to the website of the Embassy of Austria in Singapore for the latest information. Alternatively, they may contact their travel agent, or the Embassy (Singapur-ob@bmeia.gv.at or +65 6229 0190).
For all consular affairs, the Embassy requires persons to book an appointment in advance here: https://appointment.bmeia.gv.at/?Office=Singapur.
Safety and Security
Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and theft, does occur, especially in public areas, tourist areas, and larger cities. Teams may work together to distract travellers. Thefts are known to take place on trains and public transport when travellers are distracted or sleeping. Be aware of your surroundings and take care of your belongings.
Demonstrations occur regularly in Austria. They are largely peaceful but travellers should exercise caution, avoid affected areas, monitor developments through the local news, and heed the instructions of the local authorities.
Local Laws
Travellers should carry identification at all times.
Drug offences carry heavy penalties.
It is illegal to cover your face in public places or buildings.
Avoid taking photographs of buildings of military or security nature. If in doubt, check with the local authorities.
Driving: To drive on toll roads, travellers need to purchase a special sticker from petrol stations, “Tabak” shops or at the border crossing. It is mandatory to use winter tyres from 1 November to 15 April of the following year. Purchase travel insurance that covers vehicle incidents before departure.
