Visit by Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong to Jakarta, Indonesia 6 July 2026
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for the Singapore-Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat on 6 July 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Both Leaders reaffirmed Singapore and Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening ties amidst complex geopolitical headwinds. They witnessed the presentation and exchange of new Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) in carbon credits collaboration, offtake of cross-border electricity exports, development of transmission assets in relation to cross-border electricity trading (CBET), environmental cooperation, digital cooperation, and the exchange of technical information and collaboration on nuclear matters. They were also presented with a Joint Statement on Supply Chain Resilience and a Roadmap to Catalyse CBET.
The Leaders welcomed new areas of collaboration in financial technology, research cooperation, women empowerment and child protection, cross-border debt restructuring, health products and medicines, and regional supply chain integration. They noted the increased business-to-business ties, including an MOU between the Singapore Business Federation and Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry on AI-Enabled Trade Facilitation for Indonesian Small and Medium Enterprises.
Prime Minister Wong and President Prabowo also reviewed the progress made in bilateral cooperation since the last Leaders’ Retreat. They welcomed the Joint Report to the Leaders on the Six Bilateral Economic Working Groups by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong and Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto (who met recently in Jakarta on 9 June 2026). They received a Joint Update on Defence Cooperation from Coordinating Minister for Public Services and Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing and Indonesian Minister of Defence Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. The Leaders also noted the update on strengthened air connectivity between both countries through the launch of new city links, and the renewed MOUs on knowledge sharing and capacity building, and youth and sports.
Prime Minister Wong and President Prabowo reiterated their commitment to finding new pathways to collaborate in areas of mutual interest and benefit for Singapore and Indonesia. They exchanged views on regional and global developments, and agreed to work closely during Singapore’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027. The Leaders also looked forward to the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027.
