State Visit of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam to the United Republic of Tanzania, 8 to 10 June 2026
President Tharman Shanmugaratnam is on a State Visit to the United Republic of Tanzania from 8 to 10 June 2026.
On 9 June 2026, President Tharman met Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The two Presidents agreed that the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties was a timely opportunity to explore new areas of cooperation, such as in the blue and green economies, the digital economy, tourism and port development, food security, youth development, vocational and technical education, and healthcare and disease prevention, including with leading Tanzanian universities such as the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital. President Tharman and President Suluhu Hassan also expressed their shared commitment to multilateral cooperation.
Following their meeting, President Tharman and President Suluhu Hassan witnessed the signing/exchange of Memoranda of Understanding on the establishment of bilateral consultations, collaboration in carbon credits, capacity building in trade facilitation, and skills development, as well as an Agreement on the Avoidance of Double Taxation. Thereafter, both Presidents held a Joint Press Conference. They welcomed in particular the East African Community (EAC)’s intention to pursue a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Singapore – the EAC’s first FTA negotiation with a partner outside of Africa and Singapore’s first with an African partner. President Suluhu Hassan also hosted President Tharman to a State Banquet.
In the afternoon, President Tharman and President Suluhu Hassan will grace the Tanzania-Singapore Business and Investment Forum with Singapore and Tanzania companies. President Tharman will then visit the University of Dar es Salaam, the oldest and largest public university in Tanzania, and deliver a talk on opportunities for investment in inclusive and sustainable growth.
On 10 June 2026, President Tharman will visit Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. He will meet Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, who will also host a lunch. The two leaders will discuss opportunities for collaboration between Singapore and Zanzibar, particularly in business and trade. President Tharman will also visit Darajani Souk, a community rejuvenation project co-sponsored by Singapore spice and agro-commodities trading company Nomanbhoy & Sons.
President Tharman will depart Tanzania in the evening of 10 June 2026.
