Both Presidents affirmed the warm and friendly relations between Singapore and Mexico as the two countries commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year. President Tharman announced the Singapore Government’s decision to establish a resident Embassy in Mexico City in 2026. It will be Singapore’s first overseas mission in the Spanish-speaking world, and second in Latin America.
President Tharman welcomed President Sheinbaum’s commitment for Mexico to ratify the Pacific Alliance (PA)-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (PASFTA) signed on 26 January 2022, which would further enhance trade and productive investment for both countries, and help strengthen inter-regional connectivity between Southeast Asia and Latin America. The Presidents looked forward to Singapore becoming the first Associated State of the PA, once all four PA Member States (Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru) have ratified the PASFTA.
The Presidents noted the growing opportunities for collaboration in other fields of mutual interest, such as technology and innovation, port and logistics development, digitalisation and fintech, environmental protection and decarbonisation, food security, and culture. Following their meeting, the two Presidents witnessed the signing of two memoranda of understanding on coral reef restoration and on international development cooperation. President Tharman also met President of the Senate Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez and other Senators at the Senate of the Republic. President Tharman welcomed the establishment of the Mexico-Singapore Parliamentary Friendship Group in the General Congress of Mexico and the appointment of Deputy Gabriela Valdepeñas González as its President.

JOINT STATEMENT BY THE REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE AND THE UNITED MEXICAN STATES
ON THE OCCASION OF THE STATE VISIT BY MR THARMAN SHANMUGARATNAM, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE, TO MEXICO
· H.E. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, made a State Visit to Mexico from 30 November to 3 December 2025, at the invitation of H.E. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, President of the United Mexican States, to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Singapore.
· The two Presidents met on 1 December 2025. They reaffirmed their mutual desire to further strengthen and deepen the bilateral partnership.
· President Tharman announced that Singapore will establish a resident Embassy in Mexico City in 2026. The Embassy of Singapore in Mexico City will be Singapore’s first overseas mission in the Spanish-speaking world. Mexico has a resident Embassy in Singapore, established in June 1990.
· The Presidents welcomed the growing trade and investment between Mexico and Singapore, which will be further enhanced by Mexico’s ratification of the Pacific Alliance-Singapore Free Trade Agreement that was signed in January 2022. President Sheinbaum welcomed the interest of Singapore’s companies to invest in Mexico in a wide variety of sectors covered by Plan Mexico, such as technology, innovation, ports, oil and gas, among others.
· Both Presidents acknowledged Mexico’s status as a major producer of agri-food and welcomed Singapore’s decision to streamline the approval processes for Mexico’s export of pork to Singapore, in view of Mexico’s robust food safety system and export track record to Singapore, thereby facilitating increased Mexican exports and reinforcing Singapore’s food security.
· The Presidents welcomed The Acapulco-Manila Galleon: We are the Pacific, a World Born of the Tropics exhibition, that will be inaugurated by President Tharman at the Colegio de San Ildefonso on 3 December 2025.
· Both Presidents also witnessed the signing of memoranda of understanding on 1) cooperation in coral reef restoration; and 2) international development cooperation.
· The Presidents welcomed closer cooperation in the digital domain, to facilitate the potential exchange of expertise and knowledge.
· Both Presidents underscored Singapore’s and Mexico’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism, the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, and a rules-based trading system, and reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to deepen cooperation at regional and multilateral fora.
· President Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexico will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in 2028 and expressed appreciation to Singapore for supporting Mexico’s upcoming chairmanship, while also congratulating Singapore on hosting the APEC Summit in 2030.
· President Tharman extended an invitation to President Sheinbaum to make a State Visit to Singapore.
