       Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan will host the Third Singapore-Sub-Saharan Africa High-Level Ministerial Exchange Visit (AHLMEV) from 27 to 28 August 2018. 12 Ministers from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda will participate in the Exchange Visit. The theme for this year’s AHLMEV is “Singapore and Africa: Partners for Smart Cities” with a focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

       The Exchange Visit dovetails with both the 5th Africa Singapore Business Forum (ASBF) and the Singapore UN-Habitat International Leaders in Urban Governance Programme (iLUGP). The ASBF, organised by Enterprise Singapore, is the premier platform for business exchange and fostering trade between Africa and Asia. The iLUGP, which is jointly organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Centre for Liveable Cities, and UN-Habitat, is a key programme committed to supporting developing countries in the planning and implementation of sustainable cities. Together, these three events provide an opportunity for Singapore and African countries to deepen engagement and build stronger ties.

       During the visit, the Ministers will call on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and be hosted to meals by DPM and Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister Balakrishnan, and Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli. The Ministers will also meet other political officeholders including Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing and SMS (Defence) (Foreign Affairs) Dr Maliki Osman. They will exchange views on smart city and sustainable development, and discuss ways to deal with rising urban challenges, including water management, public housing, and public service delivery.

      The Ministers will also visit the Institute of Technical Education College Central, Sustainable Singapore Gallery and Marina Barrage, Singapore Aviation Academy, and Our Tampines Hub.
