Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong's Visit to Hainan, the People's Republic of China, 25 to 26 March 2026
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong visited Hainan, the People’s Republic of China, from 25 to 26 March 2026.
Prime Minister Wong delivered a keynote speech at the Opening Plenary of the 2026 Bo’ao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference this morning. In his speech, Prime Minister Wong highlighted the importance of countries finding more flexible plurilateral arrangements to deal with shared global challenges, amidst increasing volatility in the world today. These open and inclusive frameworks can complement the multilateral system. Prime Minister Wong underscored Singapore’s commitment to work with China and other countries to strengthen partnerships that can drive global growth. Prime Minister Wong also attended a Welcome Dinner hosted by the Hainan government and the BFA Secretariat for leaders attending the Conference on 25 March 2026.
Prime Minister Wong met Chairman of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji this afternoon. Prime Minister Wong and Chairman Zhao reaffirmed the strength and depth of Singapore-China relations. These are underpinned by regular high-level exchanges, substantive cooperation and people-to-people ties, which have been facilitated by our wide range of bilateral mechanisms. They commended the good progress made to further deepen bilateral ties under the All-Round High-Quality Future-Oriented Partnership, in emerging areas like the green and digital economies.
Prime Minister Wong and Chairman Zhao exchanged views on cross-strait developments, where Prime Minister Wong reiterated Singapore's consistent and longstanding "One China" policy. Prime Minister Wong reaffirmed Singapore and China’s shared commitment to upholding rules-based multilateralism and free trade, including through platforms such as APEC which China is chairing this year.
Prime Minister Wong also met and was hosted to lunch by Secretary of the Communist Party of China Hainan Provincial Committee Feng Fei today. Prime Minister Wong and Secretary Feng discussed the potential for Singapore and Hainan to exchange experiences and explore complementary areas of cooperation with the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
Prime Minister Wong will be travelling to Hong Kong this evening.
