Official Visit by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong to the Republic of Kazakhstan 24 to 27 August 2026

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong is currently on an Official Visit to Kazakhstan.  

Earlier today, Senior Minister Lee called on President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and was conferred the Order of Dostyk (Friendship) of the First Class by President Tokayev. Senior Minister Lee also called on and was hosted to dinner by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.

During Senior Minister Lee’s meeting with Kazakh leaders, he reaffirmed the warm and longstanding relations between Singapore and Kazakhstan. Both sides also discussed strengthening areas such as the economy, connectivity, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digitalisation. They also discussed how Singapore and Kazakhstan can work together to strengthen ties between Southeast Asia and Central Asia.

Senior Minister Lee and Prime Minister Bektenov witnessed the signing of two agreements. The Agreement on Cooperation in Water Resources, signed between the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE) and Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, will facilitate capacity building and joint initiatives in areas including water sustainability, water reclamation, and digitalisation. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Digital Trade Integration, signed between SCE and Middle Corridor Multimodal Ltd (MCM), will advance technical cooperation and joint initiatives in digital trade and logistics to strengthen connectivity and supply chain resilience along the Middle Corridor.

In addition, the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Kazakhstan Agency of International Development (KazAID) have agreed to conduct a second Joint Training Programme (JTP) on the theme of AI, digital development, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in Astana, Kazakhstan within the next two years. The JTP will train up to 30 mid-to-senior government officials from Central Asian countries.

Tomorrow, Senior Minister Lee will deliver a lecture at Nazarbayev University, titled “How Singapore Developed its Economy and Stayed Competitive”. He will also be conferred the title of Honorary Professor by Nazarbayev University. Senior Minister Lee will also visit the National Museum of Kazakhstan, before departing for Uzbekistan.
