Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan's Participation in the Special Emergency Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers on the Situation in the Middle East, 13 March 2026
Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan attended the Special Emergency Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers on the Situation in the Middle East on 13 March 2026. The virtual meeting was convened by ASEAN Chair the Philippines.
Minister Balakrishnan expressed support for the Philippines’ efforts to forge a regional response, and Singapore’s concern over the situation in the Middle East which has impacted the lives and safety of civilians including many ASEAN nationals. Minister Balakrishnan highlighted that a protracted conflict would have serious consequences for the world including ASEAN. He urged all parties to return to negotiations to achieve a peaceful resolution in accordance with international law and the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
The ASEAN Foreign Ministers discussed the impact of the conflict in the Middle East, including on global energy markets and maritime transport routes. They agreed on the need for a timely and unified response by ASEAN, to mitigate the impact of the conflict as well as ensure the stability of our region and the safety of ASEAN nationals in the Middle East. They emphasised the importance of an immediate cessation of hostilities and called on all parties to avoid escalatory actions, and resolve differences through diplomacy and dialogue in the interest of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Singapore will continue to monitor developments closely, and work with our ASEAN partners to assist Singaporeans and other ASEAN nationals affected by the conflict.
