MFA Spokesman's Comments on the questioning of Mr Adnan Buyung Nasution at Changi Airport of 20 March 2008

In response to media queries on the questioning of Mr Adnan Buyung Nasution at Changi Airport of 20 March 2008, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman said:

"Mr Adnan Buyung Nasution arrived in Singapore on 20th March 2008, travelling on an ordinary and not official or diplomatic passport. He was approached by immigration officers who were conducting random interviews and inspections for incoming visitors. Such interviews are part of enhanced security measures that have been introduced for several years whereby some visitors are randomly subjected to more thorough checks. After the interview, Mr Nasution was allowed to clear immigration and enter Singapore. The officer accompanying Mr Nasution apologised to him for the inconvenience.

We hope that all visitors to Singapore will understand that these extraordinary measures are necessary under current circumstances whereby all countries face new security challenges. There are not meant to cause offence to anyone but will enhance the security of all, including all visitors to Singapore. We hope for the understanding of all visitors to Singapore"
