MFA Spokesman's Comments in response to media queries on the status of the flood situation in Bangkok, Thailand (20 October 2011)

In response to media queries on the floods in Bangkok, the MFA Spokesman said :

"Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has declared the flood situation in Bangkok a "national crisis" and has directed the city's floodgates to be opened so that water can be drained into the sea. There is a possibility that parts of Bangkok may be affected, including disruptions to fresh water and electricity supplies. If Singaporeans in Bangkok have any concerns about their personal safety, they should consider moving to higher ground or areas unaffected by the flooding.

Given the severity of the situation, the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok has been advising Singaporeans in Bangkok to take all necessary precautions and will render the necessary consular assistance.

We continue to advise Singaporeans to defer non-essential travel to Bangkok until the flood situation improves.

Singaporeans who are travelling to or in Thailand and have yet to eRegister with MFA should do so at http://eregister.mfa.gov.sg.. This will allow us to keep you updated on latest developments and contact you should the need arise."
