MFA Spokesman's Comments in response to media queries on the status of Singaporeans in Bangkok, Thailand (19 October 2011)

In response to media queries on the floods in Bangkok, the MFA Spokesman said :

"The Governor of Bangkok MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra has warned that Sai Mai and Don Muang Districts located in northern Bangkok might be hit by floods within the next 48 hours, if reinforcements to the dykes fail. Given the unpredictable situation, the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok has been advising Singaporeans in Bangkok to take all necessary precautions should the situation worsen. The Singapore Embassy will continue to keep in close touch with Singaporeans in Bangkok and will render all necessary consular assistance should the situation deteriorate.

Unless travel is absolutely necessary, we urge Singaporeans planning to travel to Bangkok in the next few days to consider waiting for the flood situation to improve before doing so.

If not done already, Singaporeans travelling to or in Thailand should eRegister with MFA at http://eregister.mfa.gov.sg.. This will allow us to keep you updated on latest developments and contact you should there be need to do so. You are also encouraged to purchase comprehensive medical and travel insurance."
