In response to media queries, the MFA Spokesman said:
"The Singapore Government is seeking the extradition of Dr Ramachandran Viswanathan, who faces two charges in Singapore. The first, under Section 338 of the Singapore Penal Code, is for causing grievous hurt by doing an act so rashly as to endanger human life. The second charge, under Section 420, is for cheating - in this case, for deceiving a patient to give blood on the misimpression that her doctor had agreed to it.
Section 338, which covers offences related to grievous hurt, can carry a punishment of imprisonment of up to two years. Section 420, which relates to cheating offences, can carry a punishment of up to seven years in prison."
