Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo visited Penang on 27 November 2010 to pay his respects to the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu. Minister Yeo conveyed condolences on behalf of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, as well as the Government and the people of Singapore to the family, and to the Government and the people of Malaysia. Dr Lim, the former Chief Minister of Penang, passed away on 24 November 2010.
Dr Lim was Penang's longest-serving Chief Minister, leading the state and shaping its identity for 21 years from 1969 to 1990. He was considered the father of modern Penang. Dr Lim's own father came from Singapore.
