Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo met Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura in Tokyo on 27 October 2007. During the meeting, the Ministers reaffirmed the strong and growing relations between Singapore and Japan. They also discussed the upcoming East Asia Summit in Singapore in November 2007. They exchanged views on how ASEAN and Japan can further deepen their cooperation to enhance stability and prosperity in the region.

The Ministers reviewed the current situation in Myanmar and noted that there has been some progress. Japan fully supports ASEAN's efforts to help bring about a process of national reconciliation in Myanmar. Both Ministers affirmed the need for a genuine dialogue between Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the military leadership and the importance of ASEAN, China, Japan and India working together to help the people of Myanmar. Both Minister also affirmed the importance of UNSG Special Advisor Mr Ibrahim Gambari's mission and pledged their support to him.

Minister Yeo returns to Singapore tomorrow.
