MFA Press Statement: PM Lee Hsien Loong's Bilateral Meetings with Japanese PM Naoto Kan and Indian PM Manmohan Singh at the Sidelines of the 17th ASEAN Summit, Hanoi, 30 October 2010

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong separately met with Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the 17th ASEAN Summit in Hanoi. 

This was Prime Minister Lee's first meeting with Prime Minister Kan. Both Prime Ministers reaffirmed the excellent state of relations between Singapore and Japan, and agreed to further strengthen economic and political links. Both leaders welcomed the expansion of the East Asia Summit (EAS) to include the United States and Russia, and committed to work closely on promoting regional economic integration. In addition, Prime Minister Lee looked forward to participating at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders Meeting (AELM) in Yokohama in November, and to working with Japan towards a successful AELM. Prime Minister Lee also extended an invitation to Prime Minister Kan to visit Singapore.

In their meeting, Prime Minister Lee and Prime Minister Singh reaffirmed the excellent state of relations between Singapore and India. Both leaders discussed the growing trade relations between both countries and reviewed ways to enhance cooperation on the India-Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) signed in 2005. Prime Minister Lee congratulated Prime Minister Singh on India's successful hosting of the 2010 Commonwealth Games and extended an invitation to Prime Minister Singh to visit Singapore.
