Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo met with the Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara at the sidelines of the 22nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting in Yokohama this afternoon. During the meeting, both Ministers discussed developments in the region and the importance for Japan to remain engaged in Southeast Asia. Minister Maehara assured Minister Yeo of Japan's continued support for ASEAN's integration and the ASEAN Connectivity Initiative. The Ministers also discussed Japan's interest to participate in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) process, which Singapore supports. On Japan's role in the UN, Minister Yeo reaffirmed Singapore's support for Japan to become a Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council.
