MFA Press Statement: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Law K Shanmugam at the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, 26 September 2011

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Law K Shanmugam, who is in New York for the 66th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, chaired the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the Global Governance Group (3G) on 26 September 2011. He also held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Liechtenstein, Brazil, San Marino and Turkey, and met with officials from the US.

During the 3G meeting, Minister Shanmugam had a fruitful exchange with his counterparts from the other 3G member countries on the state of the global economy, the G20's role in global governance, and the 3G's engagement of the G20. Other invited guests included the President of the 66th UN General Assembly, Mr Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser and representatives of the past, present and upcoming Chairs of the G20 - the Republic of Korea, France and Mexico.

Minister Shanmugam and the Minister of Justice, Foreign Affairs and Cultural Affairs of Liechtenstein Dr Aurelia Frick agreed that cooperation between Singapore and Liechtenstein was good and could be further enhanced.

Brazilian Minister for External Relations Mr Antonio De Aguiar and Minister Shanmugam discussed ways of strengthening bilateral and economic cooperation.

Minister Shanmugam and the Secretary of State for Foreign and Political Affairs, Telecommunications and Transport of San Marino Ms Antonella Mularoni exchanged views on increasing economic linkages between the two countries.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Prof Dr Ahmet Davutoglu and Minister Shanmugam welcomed the strengthening of bilateral relations between Turkey and Singapore.

US Deputy Secretary of State Mr Bill Burns and Minister Shanmugam reaffirmed the positive state of bilateral relations between both countries and exchanged views on matters of regional and international concern.

Minister Shanmugam also attended the Second Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends United Against Human Trafficking and hosted a reception for Singaporeans in New York today.
