Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew met Vice President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping this afternoon. Vice President Xi is on an official visit to Singapore at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

During the meeting, Minister Mentor Lee and Vice President Xi reaffirmed the close ties between both countries and exchanged views on regional developments.

After the meeting, Minister Mentor Lee and Vice President Xi jointly unveiled the Deng Xiaoping Commemorative Marker. The marker is located along Asian Civilisations Museum Green, facing the Singapore River. The marker commemorates the two visits to Singapore by the late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping. Deng first visited Singapore in 1920 when he was a student en route to France. He subsequently made an official visit to Singapore in November 1978 as then Vice-Premier of the State Council. The unveiling is part of the commemorative events celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China.

In the evening, Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng hosted a dinner in honour of Vice President Xi.
