MFA Press Statement: Exchange of Congratulatory Messages to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Singapore and Cambodia, 15 Sep

The Republic of Singapore and the Kingdom of Cambodia established diplomatic relations on 15 September 1965.  To commemorate the 50^th anniversary of that event, President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam exchanged messages with His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, Prime Minister Hun Sen, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hor Namhong.  The texts of the messages from President Tan, PM Lee, and Minister Shanmugam are appended below.

Your Majesty,

                   On behalf of the people of Singapore, allow me to convey my warmest wishes to Your Majesty and to the people of Cambodia on the occasion of the 50^th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries. 

          Singapore and Cambodia have enjoyed longstanding relations since the days of Your Majesty’s father, the late King-Father Norodom Sihanouk, and Singapore’s first Prime Minister, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew.  Cambodia was also one of the first countries to recognise Singapore’s independence and establish diplomatic relations with us.

                   Today, our countries continue to enjoy excellent and multifaceted relations, which are underpinned by strong bonds of friendship and expanding people-to-people exchanges.  I am confident that our bilateral cooperation will continue to grow and deepen for the benefit of our peoples.

          Please accept, Your Majesty, the assurances of my highest consideration.

                   On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Singapore, I would like to extend my best wishes to you and your Government on the occasion of the 50^th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Singapore and the Kingdom of Cambodia. 

                   Cambodia was one of the first countries to recognise Singapore.   Over the past fifty years, our countries have forged strong and friendly ties.  Today, we enjoy a cooperative and multifaceted relationship that has benefitted our people.  I am confident that relations between our two countries will deepen in the years ahead.  I look forward to continuing to work with you to strengthen our cooperation bilaterally and within ASEAN.

Singapore and Cambodia are old friends who enjoy close and warm ties.  We share common interests and this has been shown by how our relations have grown over the past five decades.  I am confident that we will continue to work closely to deepen our bilateral cooperation for the benefit of our people.  I also look forward to the further collaboration between our two countries in ASEAN as we work towards the establishment of the ASEAN Community later this year and developing a Post-2015 Vision for ASEAN.
