The Government has appointed Mr Verghese Mathews as Singapore's High Commissioner to the Republic of Fiji and Singapore's Ambassador to the Pacific Islands Forum. He will be resident in Singapore.
Mr Mathews is currently Singapore's High Commissioner to the People's Republic of Bangladesh, resident in Singapore. He is concurrently Deputy Director of the Middle East Institute. He is also a Senior Fellow at the MFA Diplomatic Academy and a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.
Mr Mathews joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in May 1969 and served in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. He set up the Singapore Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1992 and served as Consul. When the Consulate was upgraded to a High Commission and relocated to Pretoria in 1995, Mr Mathews was the Acting High Commissioner until March 1997. He was Singapore's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia from July 2000 to March 2004. Prior to this appointment, he was Director of Consular from April 1997 to May 2000.
Mr Mathews was awarded three Singapore National Day Awards, including the Public Administration (Silver) and Public Administration (Bronze). He was also awarded the Cambodian Royal Award 2004 from King Norodom Sihanouk.
Mr Mathews is married to Madam Amy Ammujam Nambiar and they have two children.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
Verghese Mathews is Singapore's High Commissioner to the People's Republic of Bangladesh, resident in Singapore. Mr Mathews is concurrently Deputy Director of the Middle East Institute. He is a Senior Fellow at the MFA Diplomatic Academy and a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.
Mr Mathews joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in May 1969 and served in Malaysia on three postings, in Indonesia and in Thailand.
He set up the Singapore Consulate in Johannesburg in 1992 and served as Consul. When the Consulate was upgraded to a High Commission and relocated to Pretoria in 1995, he was appointed Minister-Counsellor and served as Acting High Commissioner till March 1997. Mr Mathews was appointed Director of Consular from April 1997 to May 2000, subsequent to which he served as Singapore's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia from July 2000 to March 2004.
