The Government has appointed Mr Chew Tai Soo as Singapore's Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran. He will be resident in Singapore.
Mr Chew graduated from the University of Manchester in United Kingdom in 1964. He is currently Ambassador-at-Large and concurrently, Senior Adviser in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr Chew joined the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1972. He was Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador-at-Large from 1995 to 1998. During his career, Mr Chew has served as Singapore's Ambassador to Japan and France, as well as Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and in New York.
Mr Chew was the Chairman of the GATT Committee on Trade and Development in 1984 and the Chairman of three GATT Dispute Settlement Panels in 1988. In 1992, he initiated the founding of the Forum of Small States for countries in the United Nations with a population of less than 10 million, and was its Chairman until 1995. In 1993, he was elected as Co-Vice Chairman of the Working Group on the Reform in the Security Council. He held the appointment until 1995 when he relinquished his post as Singapore's Permanent Representative in New York.
Mr Chew was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 2000. In 2010 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
He is married to Madam Foo Wai Lin and they have two children.
