His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein called on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and met Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong, who also hosted a lunch in King Abdullah’s honour.
President Tharman and King Abdullah reaffirmed the longstanding and warm relations between Singapore and Jordan. Jordan was one of four countries which sponsored Singapore’s membership in the United Nations in 1965. Both countries have developed a multi-faceted partnership over the years. President Tharman and King Abdullah discussed issues relating to cooperation in education and trade and investment, developments in Gaza, and the Middle East Peace Process.
Prime Minister Wong and King Abdullah discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation in fields such as education, vocational training, investment promotion, and green energy. Prime Minister Wong thanked King Abdullah for Jordan’s support for the welfare of the Singaporean student community in Jordan. Jordan has also partnered Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) on the Postgraduate Certificate in Islam in Contemporary Societies and the Singapore College of Islamic Studies. Singapore and Jordan share a common interest in promoting inter-faith harmony and understanding as multi-religious societies.
Prime Minister Wong and King Abdullah had a useful discussion on developments in the Middle East, including the situation in Gaza. Prime Minister Wong expressed his appreciation for Jordan’s facilitation of Singapore’s humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza, including Singapore’s recent contribution of prosthetic supplies for about 100 Palestinian amputees. Singapore will continue to work with regional partners including Jordan to support international efforts for the reconstruction needs of Gaza after a permanent ceasefire has been reached. Prime Minister Wong agreed that in the longer term, it would be vital to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the interest of regional peace and stability. Singapore believes that a negotiated two-State solution, consistent with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, is the only viable pathway to achieving a comprehensive, just, and durable solution to the conflict.
