Consular Update on the earthquake in Japan [as of 1430 hrs, 22 November 2016]

An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture at 0600 hrs (local time) on 22 November 2016. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially issued tsunami warnings for Fukushima and Miyagi Prefectures and advisories for the surrounding regions. However, the JMA has since lifted all tsunami warnings and advisories at 1250 hrs (local time) and there is no longer a tsunami threat. The Singapore Embassy in Tokyo has contacted registered Singaporeans in the affected regions. Thus far, we have not received any reports of Singaporeans who were affected by the earthquake and are in need of consular assistance. Singaporeans who are planning to travel to or residing in the affected regions should monitor the news closely and heed the advice of the local authorities as aftershocks are common after a major earthquake. They are also advised to stay in touch with their family and friends so that they know you are safe.
