In response to queries from the media on Mr Xanana Gusmao's meetings with Singapore leaders, the MFA Spokesman made the following comments:
"At Mr Xanana Gusmao's meeting with PM, Mr Gusmao briefed PM on the situation in East Timor and on East Timor's reconstruction and developmental needs. Mr Gusmao sought Singapore's assistance in areas such as human resource development and the possibility of Singapore companies investing in East Timor. In response, PM noted that East Timor faced enormous challenges. Therefore, a co-ordinated international effort, especially with the involvement of the major economies, should continue to support East Timor's reconstruction efforts. Singapore would do what it can within its limited means to assist, especially through Singapore's technical assistance programmes."
