59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Related Meetings in Manila, the Philippines, 20 to 24 July 2026

          At the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan had a wide-ranging discussion with his ASEAN counterparts on deepening regional integration, strengthening ASEAN’s capacity to respond to developments in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and supply chain resilience, as well as harnessing the potential of the digital and green economies.


          The Ministers discussed the implications of the unfolding situation in the Middle East and reaffirmed the importance of upholding international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This includes safeguarding freedom of navigation and overflight and ensuring the safe, unimpeded, and continuous transit passage of vessels in straits used for international navigation, such as the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.


          The Ministers reaffirmed the Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar and called for concrete and measurable steps towards its implementation, including the permanent cessation of violence, release of all political prisoners as well as safe and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid across Myanmar. The Ministers also stressed the importance of constructive dialogue among all of Myanmar’s key stakeholders to achieve a peaceful and durable resolution of the crisis.


          The Ministers welcomed the Philippines’ plan to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia on 24 July 2026, which will reaffirm ASEAN’s commitment to uphold an open, inclusive, and rules-based regional architecture, including by expanding and strengthening cooperation with its external partners.
