Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan met National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan in Washington D.C. on 20 June 2023. They reaffirmed the excellent and multi-faceted Singapore-US partnership, and welcomed the expansion of bilateral cooperation to new frontiers such as critical and emerging technologies, cybersecurity, climate change and space.

Minister Balakrishnan and NSA Sullivan discussed the establishment of a bilateral dialgue on critical and emerging technologies. They expressed the shared belief in the importance of an open, interoperable and secure technology ecosystem, based on respect for a rules-based international order. They tasked senior officials to follow up expeditiously, including on the scope and modalities of the dialogue.

Minister Balakrishnan and NSA Sullivan underscored their shared commitment towards strengthening an open and inclusive rules-based multilateral order, as well as deepening the US’ economic engagement of the region. They welcomed the substantive progress on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF).

Minister Balakrishnan also met Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell and exchanged views on regional and international developments. They agreed to work together to enhance the US’ engagement of Southeast Asia, including deepening ASEAN-US cooperation.
