Studying in Germany was a leap of faith that proved both challenging and deeply rewarding. I was pushed out of my comfort zone as I navigated unfamiliar bureaucracies and confronted language barriers in both my studies and daily life. Overcoming these, especially as the world was emerging from Covid-19 lockdowns, gave me a greater appreciation for community, especially among fellow international students. I experienced firsthand how our Overseas Missions reach out to support Singaporeans overseas either through consular assistance or to provide a familiar touchpoint far from home. My internship in London gave greater insight into how Foreign Service Officers operate, including by reporting on local developments that have real implications for Singapore.
