A United States Congressional delegation is visiting Singapore from 31 July to 4 August 2023. The delegation is led by Congressional Singapore Caucus Co-Chairs Representative Rick Larsen (D-Washington) and Representative David Schweikert (R-Arizona), and joined by Representative Donald Norcross (D-New Jersey).
The Congressional Singapore Caucus was first established in 2002 and has been a strong symbol of bipartisan support for relations between Singapore and the United States.
The Congressional delegation called on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong. They affirmed the deep and multifaceted relationship between Singapore and the United States. They also had a good exchange on regional and international geo-political issues. Deputy Prime Minister Wong highlighted the growth opportunities in ASEAN and both sides agreed on the importance of the US’ continued engagement of the region.
The Congressional delegation was hosted to dinner by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. Minister Balakrishnan thanked the Singapore Caucus for their strong support for the bilateral partnership, marked by the US’ role as the largest foreign investor in Singapore, the over 5,700 US companies that call Singapore home, and Singapore’s unique status as the US’ only Major Security Cooperation Partner.
Earlier today, the Congressional delegation also called on Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, and met US businesses representatives over a lunch hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore.
During their visit, the Congressional delegation will call on Minister for Communications and Information Josephine Teo and meet Acting Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat, who will host them to a tour of Changi Airport. The Congressional delegation will also meet Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs Chairperson Vikram Nair and Deputy Chairperson Alex Yam, as well as representatives from Enterprise Singapore, Economic Development Board and the PSA Singapore.
