State Visit of His Excellency Klaus Werner Iohannis, President of Romania, 9 to 12 March 2023

President of Romania His Excellency Klaus Werner Iohannis received a ceremonial welcome at the Istana this morning, following which he called on President Halimah Yacob and met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. President Iohannis and First Lady Carmen Iohannis also had a new orchid hybrid, the Dendrobium Carmen Iohannis, named in their honour, and attended a State Banquet hosted by President Halimah and Mr Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee.

 

President Halimah and President Iohannis reaffirmed the warm and longstanding relations between Singapore and Romania. They looked forward to continuing our excellent cooperation at international fora. They also discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interest, including renewable energy, climate change, ways to further economic and cybersecurity cooperation, and to build closer people-to-people ties through tourism. The two Presidents also exchanged views on regional and international developments. They emphasised the importance of free trade, multilateralism, and a rules-based international order, and of upholding an open and inclusive global architecture.

 

President Iohannis and Prime Minister Lee welcomed the strengthening of our bilateral relations, and discussed the deepening of existing areas of cooperation such as trade and investment while exploring collaboration in emerging areas such as cybersecurity. They expressed their confidence that this visit will further enhance the friendship and cooperation between Singapore and Romania and looked forward to having more exchanges at all levels of government in future.

                    

President Iohannis is scheduled to depart Singapore on Sunday, 12 March 2023.
