Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and United Kingdom (UK) Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs James Cleverly signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Singapore-United Kingdom Third Country Training Programme this evening.

 

The MOU underscores both countries’ commitment to jointly promote capacity-building in ASEAN and the region. It reaffirms the excellent state of bilateral relations and extensive cooperation between Singapore and the UK. (A factsheet on the MOU is appended.) Minister Balakrishnan and Foreign Secretary Cleverly also discussed ways to enhance cooperation in areas including the digital economy and clean energy, and exchanged views on global and regional developments. Minister Balakrishnan welcomed the UK’s interest to deepen its engagement of our region, including through ASEAN.

 

Earlier today, Foreign Secretary Cleverly called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and met Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong.

 

Foreign Secretary Cleverly will depart Singapore later today.

The MOU on the Singapore-UK TCTP underscores Singapore and the United Kingdom’s commitment to promote capacity-building in Southeast Asia and the region

 

It builds on both countries’ strengths in international development cooperation, including through the sharing of best practices in sustainable development.

 

It also supports the Plan of Action to implement the ASEAN-UK Dialogue Partnership, through the exchange of best practices in areas of complementary expertise and capacity-building for ASEAN Member States.

 

The Singapore-UK TCTP is one of several technical cooperation partnerships under the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP), Singapore’s flagship platform for extending technical assistance to fellow developing countries. Established in 1992, the SCP has hosted close to 150,000 officials from more than 180 countries and territories as well as international and regional organisations.
