Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan’s Attendance at the Virtual Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting, 14 October 2020

14 October 2020

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan attended the virtual Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting (CFAMM) on 14 October 2020, which was chaired by the United Kingdom as the current Chair-in-Office. Minister Balakrishnan shared Singapore’s experience in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and underscored our commitment to climate change and the realisation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Singapore has been a member of the Commonwealth since independence in 1965 and hosted the first Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 1971. With a shared language and institutional heritage, the Commonwealth is an important forum where Singapore can engage fellow members on issues of common concern such as climate change, global health, and cybersecurity. Singapore benefited from the generosity of other Commonwealth members during our early nationhood, and now shares our experience and expertise through capacity building courses for fellow developing countries, including members of the Commonwealth.
