Condolence Letter from President Halimah Yacob to the Amir of the State of Kuwait His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah
30 September 2020
His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah
Amir
State of Kuwait
Your Highness,
On behalf of the people of Singapore, I convey my deepest condolences on the passing of His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah.
I was honoured to have met His Highness Sheikh Sabah during my State Visit to Kuwait in November 2019. I recall his enduring optimism for preserving regional stability. His Highness was a widely respected statesman who actively worked to promote peace and understanding. His exemplary efforts in tackling humanitarian issues was duly recognised by the United Nations, which presented him with the Global Humanitarian Leadership Award in 2014. His Highness will be greatly missed for his wisdom and leadership.
Singapore will always appreciate the longstanding support of His Highness for the bilateral relationship between our two countries. As Foreign Minister, Sheikh Sabah played an instrumental role in ensuring the safety of the Singaporeans, including our former President S R Nathan, involved in the 1974 “Laju” hijacking incident. In 2004, Singapore was honoured to receive an official visit by His Highness as then-Prime Minister of Kuwait. His Highness remained a strong believer of cooperation among small states such as Kuwait and Singapore for mutual benefit.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Your Highness and all Kuwaitis during this period of mourning.
Yours sincerely,
HALIMAH YACOB
