Singapore's Support for China's Efforts to Overcome the 2019 Novel Coronavirus Outbreak

20 February 2020

On 19 February 2020, Singapore despatched humanitarian assistance, including medical supplies for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), via Singapore Airlines flight SQ802 to Beijing. This follows an earlier despatch of humanitarian assistance by the Singapore Government to Wuhan via Scoot flight TR5120 on 8 February 2020. The humanitarian assistance will help communities severely affected by the outbreak in China, and contribute to efforts to contain the virus.

In his discussion with Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and Vice Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Han Zheng on 7 February 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat had explained that the humanitarian assistance from the Singapore Government was part of a collective effort by Singaporeans to help the affected communities in China, which included fund-raising by the Singapore Red Cross, with support from our trade associations and chambers, companies and local community organisations. Deputy Prime Minister Heng also reaffirmed to Vice Premier Han that Singapore was confident that through close cooperation, China, Singapore and the rest of the international community will overcome this challenge.
