Appointment of Ambassador to Japan and Ambassador to the Russian Federation, 26 September 2019

The Government has appointed Mr Peter Tan Hai Chuan as Singapore’s Ambassador to Japan, and Mr S Premjith as Singapore’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation.

 
Mr Peter Tan Hai Chuan was Deputy Secretary for Southeast Asia and ASEAN from 2015 to 2019. He was Singapore’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, with concurrent accreditation to Mongolia, from 2011 to 2015.

 
Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1992, Mr Tan has served in various capacities dealing with issues related to Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, United Nations and Technical Cooperation. He served twice in the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo, as First Secretary from 1995 to 1998, and Deputy Chief of Mission from 2002 to 2005. Mr Tan was also Counsellor at the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur from 2001 to 2002.

 
Mr Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts in 1992. In 2000, he obtained a Master of Arts in East Asian Studies from Columbia University, United States of America, under the Fulbright Scholarship.

 
Mr Tan was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2008. He is married to Madam Sim Siew Eng. 

 
Mr Premjith was Singapore’s Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt from 2013 to 2019, and Singapore’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia from 2010 to 2013.

 
Since joining the Foreign Service in 1994, Mr Premjith has served in various capacities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs handling issues related to International Economics, Southeast Asia, and South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa directorates. He was Director of the South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa Directorate from 2005 to 2010. He also served as First Secretary at the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta from 1997 to 2001.

 
Mr Premjith graduated from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Economics in 1994. In 2002, he obtained a Master of Philosophy from University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, under the Raffles/Chevening Scholarship.

 
Mr Premjith is married to Ms Libby Sang.

PETER TAN

 

AMBASSADOR TO JAPAN

 

 

Mr Peter Tan Hai Chuan will be appointed as Singapore’s Ambassador to Japan.

 

Mr Tan was Deputy Secretary/Southeast Asia & ASEAN in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from January 2015 to September 2019. Mr Tan was the Singapore Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (concurrently accredited to Mongolia) from February 2011 to January 2015.

 

Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1992, Mr Tan has served in various capacities on issues related to Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, United Nations and Technical Cooperation. Mr Tan served in the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo as First Secretary from 1995 to 1998 and in the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur as Counsellor from 2001 to 2002.  He also served in the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo from 2002 to 2005 as Counsellor, and subsequently as Acting Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission.  Mr Tan was appointed as Second Director of the Southeast Asia Directorate on 27 December 2005, and served as Director from October 2006 to August 2010. 

 

Mr Tan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Hons II Upper from the National University of Singapore in 1992.  He was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship and obtained his Master of Arts (East Asian Studies) from Columbia University, USA, in 2000.

 

Mr Tan was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2008. He is married to Madam Sim Siew Eng.

S PREMJITH

AMBASSADOR TO THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

 

Mr S Premjith will be appointed as Singapore’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation.

 

Mr Premjith joined the Singapore Foreign Service in 1994. He was Singapore’s Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt as well as to the State of Libya from July 2013 to September 2019. Prior to this appointment, Mr Premjith was Singapore’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia from August 2010 till June 2013.  He served as First Secretary in the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta from 1997 to 2001.

 

Mr Premjith served in various capacities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on issues covering International Economics, Southeast Asia and South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. He was Director of the South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa Directorate from 2005 to 2010.

 

Mr Premjith graduated with a Bachelor of Economics (Honours I) from Murdoch University, Australia, in 1994.  In 1995, he obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in World Trade Policy from the World Trade Organisation. In 2002, he received a Master of Philosophy from University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, under the Raffles/Chevening Scholarship.

 

Mr Premjith is married to Ms Libby Sang.
