Visit of Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong to Seoul, Republic of Korea, 13 to 15 May 2019

14 May 2019

Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong is visiting Seoul, Republic of Korea (ROK), from 13 to 15 May 2019 to attend Chosun Ilbo’s 10th Asian Leadership Conference (ALC).

During the visit, ESM met ROK Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon on 14 May 2019. ESM and Prime Minister Lee reaffirmed the warm and friendly relations between Singapore and the ROK. ESM also expressed support for the ROK’s New Southern Policy, which will strengthen ASEAN-ROK relations. They also discussed domestic developments in the ROK, as well as regional and global developments, including US-China relations and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

ESM spoke at the ALC’s Global Top Leaders Session this morning (read transcript here), and delivered the ALC keynote address over dinner (read transcript here). ESM spoke about the key risks facing Asia, such as the negative effects of globalisation and erosion of the rules-based global order.  He also spoke about US-China relations, and how Asian countries should form a “Moderate Voice” as friends of both the US and China.

ESM will have a dialogue session with members of the Federation of Korean Industries, and be hosted to lunch by former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon tomorrow.
