MFA Press Statement: Official Visit of Her Excellency Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, 30 Nov to 2 Dec 2016

State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Her Excellency Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is in Singapore on an Official Visit. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi called on Acting President J Y Pillay this morning, where she provided an overview of the Myanmar government’s domestic preoccupations, particularly in the areas of job creation, infrastructure, education, electricity generation, and public health. 

 

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and DPM Teo Chee Hean hosted Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to breakfast and lunch respectively.   ESM Goh and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi discussed Myanmar’s economy and the areas where Singapore businesses could contribute to Myanmar’s development.  Over lunch, DPM Teo and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi exchanged views on security and social issues including the importance of education, and equipping youth with the right skills for jobs. 

 

Earlier in the morning, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi attended a ceremony at the Singapore Botanic Gardens where a new orchid hybrid “Papilionanda Aung San Suu Kyi”, was named in Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s honour.  Daw Aung San Suu Kyi also received a briefing by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau. 

 

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi co-officiated at the opening ceremony of the three-month exhibition of Myanmar artefacts “Cities and Kings: Ancient Treasures from Myanmar” at the Asian Civilisations Museum this evening.
