            Minister of  Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste Hernâni Coelho, who is on his first official visit to Singapore, called on Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan earlier today.

            Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Coelho reaffirmed the warm and friendly relations between Singapore and Timor-Leste.  Minister Coelho updated Minister Balakrishnan on developments in Timor-Leste, as well as on Timor-Leste’s foreign policy priorities.  The Ministers also had an exchange of views on regional developments.  Minister Balakrishnan hosted Minister Coelho to dinner this evening.

            Minister Coelho will call on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong tomorrow.  Minister Coelho will also visit the Gardens by the Bay and plant a Musa x paradisiaca, which is commonly referred to as “Banana Singapura” in Timor-Leste.  The plant was a gift from Prime Minister Dr Rui Maria de Araújo following a visit to Singapore last year.
