MFA Press Statement: Explosions in Jakarta

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore - $name

Singapore strongly condemns today's multiple attacks. We extend our sympathies to all victims and their families, and stand in solidarity with the Indonesian government against all acts of terrorism. These attacks serve as a stark reminder of the threat that terrorism continues to pose to all countries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta are monitoring the situation in Jakarta. As of 1400 hours (Singapore time) 17 July 2009, we have not received any report of Singaporean casualties. MFA and the Embassy are in touch with several Singaporeans staying at the Ritz Carlton and JW Marriott hotels. All of them are safe.

We are continuing to contact Singaporeans in Jakarta who have registered with us. Our Embassy is also keeping in touch with the Singaporean community in Jakarta. Friends and relatives of Singaporeans in Jakarta can call the MFA hotline at 63320000, or the Embassy at 6221-29950400.

Singaporeans who are unable to avoid travelling to Jakarta and other parts of Indonesia are advised to exercise vigilance and monitor developments at their intended destinations through the local news. They should take all necessary precautions to ensure their personal safety. Singaporeans who travel to Indonesia should register with MFA through our website www.mfa.gov.sg so that we can contact and assist you in an emergency. We also encourage all Singaporeans travelling abroad to purchase comprehensive medical and travel insurance.
