MFA Press Statement: Appointment of Singapore's Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam

The Government has appointed Mr Wong Wie Kuen, Simon as Singapore's next Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam with effect from 9 February 2009.

Mr Wong joined the Singapore Foreign Service in 1990. He last served as Director/Northeast Asia in the Ministry's headquarters (April 2006 - January 2009). He also served as Director/Americas (April 2005 - July 2007) and Director/Europe (May 2005 - February 2006). Mr Wong had also served in the Singapore Embassies in Seoul and Beijing.

Mr Wong was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in 2002, and the Long Service Award (15 years) in 2003.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Mr Wong Wie Kuen, Simon was born on 25 April 1965. He last served as Director/Northeast Asia in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr Wong graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Social Science degree (Honours II Upper) in Sociology in 1990. In 1998, he received his Master of Arts degree in East Asian studies from Cornell University, USA.

Mr Wong joined the Singapore Foreign Service in 1990 where he held the post of Country Officer/Western Europe/Policy, Planning and Analysis (PPA) Directorate II (1990 to 1992). He then served as First Secretary in the Singapore Embassy in Seoul (1992 to 1995). Upon his return to the Ministry headquarters, he was appointed Senior Assistant Director/PPA Directorate III (1996 to 1997) and covering Deputy Director/China (1998 to 2000). Mr Wong served as Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission (2000 to 2004) and subsequently as Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission (2004 to 2005) in the Singapore Embassy in Beijing. He was Director/Americas (with effect from 2005) and concurrently Director/Europe (2005 to 2006). He was concurrently Director/Northeast Asia (2006 to 2007). Mr Wong subsequently served as Director/Northeast Asia from July 2007 to January 2009.

Mr Wong was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in 2002, and the Long Service Award (15 years) in 2003.
