MFA Press Statement: Visit By The Director-General of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Mr Koichiro Matsuura, 4-5 December 2008

Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, who is visiting Singapore under the auspices of Singapore's United Nations Distinguished Visitors Programme, called on Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong and Senior Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong at the Istana today. Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Balaji Sadasivan also hosted a lunch in the honour of Mr Matsuura.
During the call on PM, PM commended Mr Matsuura for the progress that UNESCO had made under Mr Matsuura's leadership and expressed Singapore's support for UNESCO. Mr Matsuura expressed his appreciation for Singapore's decision to rejoin UNESCO in 2007 and briefed PM on UNESCO's work and priorities, especially in the field of education.

During the call on SM, Mr Matsuura briefed SM on UNESCO's role in introducing best practices in education to developing countries. SM shared with Mr Matsuura Singapore's policies and said that Singapore would be pleased to share our experience with other developing countries.
